Clad in resplendent Scottish regalia, Macbeth sits next to a woman reading the Oxford Companion to English Literature's dry-as-dust synopsis before the "tomorrow and tomorrow" soliloquy finally introduces Shakespeare's original poetry. To emphasize this already Brechtian approach, the single-take treatment frequently (and deliberately) reveals both lights and a crouching sound recordist.

A young woman shakes eels out from between the sheets of a bed. She sews the eels on to a sheet, then cuts them away and they fall to the ground. A dilemma. Jayne Parker discovered film as a medium when she was a sculpture student at Canterbury College of Art (1977-80). In early works, objects, performance and gesture were combined by the camera to explore space, duration and the physical body. The images in these early films were both literal and metaphoric, depicting exact events but also creating physical and personal associations for the viewer. Ideas are evoked in images rather than words; ordinary actions are also enigmas.

A filmic meditation of sexuality, loss and rebirth, in which meaning is built through association, repetition and pace. As with Unfolding and Swan this film was made whilst Syed was still a student at University of East London. The film was structured entirely through the process of exploring 16mm printing techniques; the pace of the film being stipulated by the time it took to fade from a saturated dense black to a ghostly white in which the memory of an image more than the actual image is perceived.

Unfolding depicts the gendered space of the launderette as both a site of oppression and possible resistance. “I was interested in making a film about women’s work spaces; the launderette is a functional space, but it is also a place where women meet socially. I got to know the women, took my Bolex (a wind-up camera) and after a while I felt comfortable enough to start filming. It made me aware of the way in which documentaries can be a form of control. On the one hand, it was a straightforward documentary and, on the other, it questioned my role as maker. It took a long time to make and was extremely rigorous.” (Alia Syed)

A film investigating the nature of spectator perception in an unfamiliar environment. Manipulating the movement of the film direction on the screen much like a camera shutter, Hammer questions the perceptual experience of mass tourism as the Bâteau Mouche endlessly circles the île de la Cité.

This film is a pure fascination with a filmic quality of the image captured on 16mm expired stock, hand-developed while neglecting rules of color processing and manipulated on a JK optical printer. Shot in 2008 it presents a transformed picture of Rotterdam's windmills reminiscent of Dutch Golden Age paintings and traditional Delft tiles.
