Poster for Princesa

2021 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Princesa is a young Nigerian woman who arrived in Sardinia as a victim of human trafficking. There is a syncretism on the island, between the beliefs of a primitive animism, traditional Christianity and the more recent faith of the Nigerian Evangelical church. Princesa's face reflects an inner world dominated by fear, the break with her own land, and the desire to make good in a new one. Footage shot during a Nigerian funeral rite and a sequence from a Nollywood drama both contain biographical traces of the lead character. Princesa has made a choice, but she is not yet free.

Poster for The Forgotten Women

1997 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The film is a documentary about Angola. It tells of the heavy cost of war to women. After ten years of struggle for independence, the war in Angola had continued for another twenty years. The film explores the motives of the combatants, including Cuba and South Africa's apartheid government. In this film, Folly lets women tell their own stories. She shows the women from mid- or close-range, forcing the viewer to focus on their faces rather than their bodies or surroundings, and takes the time to let them say what they have to say, giving a unique women's perspective of the conflict. Folly participates in the film through her voice-over, giving a subjective element. She admits that she is not familiar with Angola, and certainly is not an authority. The film thus becomes a record of Folly's own journey of discovery.

Poster for Blakk wi Blak...k...k

1993 · ★ 7.5 (1)

"The bridge built in 'Blakk wi Blak...k...k' takes its audience back and forth between Jamaica and Toronto in a rapid-fire commute that soon blurs the two places into one. At the centre of this swirl is world renowned dub poet Mutabaruka, possessed of one of the most trenchant tongues in Jamaica. In this fast-paced portrait co-directed by Canadian poet Lillian Allen, he brings his wit and sharp intelligence to some of his favourite subjects-tourism, Marcus Garvey, true Rastafari, and fast food as chemical warfare. Both in performance and interview, his liberation lessons, comic asides and dubwise Rastafarian philosophy cut hard to the bone." - Cameron Bailey

Poster for Kiyoko's Situation

1989 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Kiyoko's Situation articulates the deeply embedded cultural roles of Japanese women through the parallel stories of two female artists, Kiyoko and Tani. In Idemitsu's narrative-within-a-narrative, "Kiyoko's situation" is played out on a television monitor within Tani's drama. Tani is paralyzed in her attempts to paint by her feeling that, as a single woman, she has failed in society's eyes. Kiyoko, a young mother viciously criticized by her husband and family for her fierce determination to paint, eventually compromises her art for "maternal duty." As Kiyoko complies with the family, Tani, isolated and despairing, is driven to suicide. Idemitsu's chillingly omniscient television monitor, which acts as the psychological "other," metaphorically and literally condemns Tani to death. In the final cruel irony, she hangs herself, using the television monitor as a jumping-off point.

This video retells and disorders an important of a pre-Columbian Native American city directly across the Mississippi River from modern St. Louis, Missouri: a location that is visited, preserved, and endlessly repeated via prescribed routes and prerecorded narratives. Rather than strive for originality, my intention is to work with found audio so as to displace these repetitions.
