A Sail is about the obsession with identity and homeland. Told through personal biography, the film searches for lost and split identity, using collective and personal archive materials and recent visits to Abkhazia; Finding abandoned summer house after 25 years in unrecognised territory offers a new perspective on roots. The house turns out to be a trap and a revelation; a “rite of passage” that opens the door to revisit the past.

It is a story about a woman overtaken by war all her life. Her father was a Soviet soldier in the time of World War II, her husband was a Soviet military officer who died from injuries sustained during the infamous Soviet military campaign in Afghanistan, while Nina’s eldest son volunteered with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and was captured and brutally executed by Russian mercenaries during the undeclared war between Russia and Ukraine in the East of Ukraine.

Each nameless person has to get their name. There’s no place where you can get such an acute feeling of the world and life as in a small neglected town on the edge of the earth. We collect intimate and genuine stories of the nameless people living between the wild northern taiga and an old Gulag prison, which still casts its grim shade on their joys and griefs.

After 17 years in business, La Villita Bakery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn was forced to close its doors. A victim of rising rents and rapid gentrification, this family owned business was a staple of the working class community that once could afford to live in the area. Chronicling the final days of this beloved bakery, The Last Bread (2013) captures the death of yet another small business in an increasingly homogeneous New York City. La Villita was located on the corner of Grand street and Bedford Ave, the division between the North and the Southside of Williamsburg.

A study of atmospheric modulations, shifting colors and textures in a meditative sequence of images. The rhythms and tonal impressions of details flow between spaces and offer a kind of complexity and contrast to a perceived sense of time. From slow to fast, the sequence merges ideas of place and identity with time and introspection. In this piece, I explore the flora of Grand Cayman in July.

"Dreaming in Aspect Ratio" is a hand-made diary film and experiment in disrupted stereoscopy; an adopted "found" home movie. A playful queer self-portrait in found dream memories. An experimental documentary and Surrealist détournement. Bright colours collaged with black and white imagery of the joy of female friendships evoke dreaming and reverie; a lost queer childhood regained through the magic of cinema, disrupting typical self-portraiture and auto-ethnography.

Poster for Evokation of My Demon Sister

2002 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Cantor reimagines Kenneth Anger’s Invokation of My Demon Brother (1969) as if it were a paean to Hindu goddess of destruction Kali instead of Lucifer. In Cantor's take, Anger's hypermasculine imagination of the occult is replaced by that of an ironic depiction of female "hysterics"; a romantic strings section sweeps over the Mick Jagger Moog soundtrack; and Anton LeVay and Bobby Beausoleil are replaced by Sissy Spacek in Carrie and Christine Noonan in Lindsey Anderson’s if….

Poster for Within Heaven and Hell

1996 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Swinging between pleasure and torment, Cantor narrates an autobiographical story of a doomed love affair over scenes from The Sound of Music (Robert Wise, 1965) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974). Wittily and ingeniously cutting between parallel sequences from the iconic Hollywood musical and the equally iconic slasher film, Cantor draws out the familial and sexual tensions and terrors underlying both. At one point, in Within Heaven and Hell, Cantor relates a time her lover said to her, “You sound like a movie.” As Cantor would later note, both "The Sound of Music and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are based on true stories.”

A chapter from the cycle of experimental films called If I Ever Lose My Eyes follows representatives of the Movement of Linen Film. Ladislav Valeš sees the film media as the Shroud of Turin which imprints not only the surface, but also what extends beyond us. In the same way, the author of the film imprints Valeš’s face and figure into the black-white countryside surrounding Klapý. The shapes of the bridge and gravestones represent the architectonic morphology of human mind, which merges reality and fiction, consciousness and subconsciousness.

The audio-visual poem tells the story of the Scottish mythological figure - the selkie - driven from the depths of the ocean to land, from which she longs to return and merge once again with the sea. The juxtaposition of simple 2D animation, a digitally generated 3D world, an ambient soundtrack, and a mysterious voice-over creates an oppressive experience with a philosophical overlay dealing with the loss of identity and the impossibility of returning to nature.
