In 2007, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Women's Council received funding to undertake the Major NAN Women's Development Project over a three year period. KANIKANITCHIK EQUAYWUK is a Cree term that literally translates into "a group of women leaders who lead the way." This film shows the project's immediate and long-term impacts on women and their remote communities in Northern Ontario.

From the opening scenes of clothespins "dancing" on a rack, through the images of the family photographs, a wooden chair, an expired student I.D. card and fragmented parts of the body, the video opens up a dialogue of personal identity. In particular, a recorded conversation between Kinga and Delfina posits many questions regarding their identifications as either Polish Canadian and/or Canadian-Polish. Is it or is it no longer possible to identify oneself with a fixed geographic place?

Poster for ABC

1997 · ★ 9.5 (2)

"ABC" consists of four objects: two bureaucratic looking chairs, one 27" TV monitor and a two meter long metallic table. The chairs are placed at the shorter ends of the table. While one chair is emptied by it's interlocutor, the other is occupied by a large TV monitor. The eleven minute long video displays three close up images of the mouth that in a deliberately exaggerated manner pronounce three uncanny stories.

Poster for Orthoepic Exercise

"This peculiar instrument consists of two metre long prosthetic tongue whose one side is inserted into my opened mouth and the other one is sharply pointed like a warrior's sword. I also have a shiny helmet that encloses my brain and protects my face with two elegantly cut out metallic side sheets. And then imagine me, standing in the middle of the room and "exercising my tongue", stretching it, pulling it out, and perhaps inflicting pain upon myself while being covered by this ambivalently protective device while trying to pronounce inaudible words. As I am making my "beautifully threatening" instrument for the straight and correct (ortho) pronunciations of the words (orthoepy) right here and now, I realize that I am setting up conditions for the war. This war will be fought for the sake of "just words" and it will certainly require proper arms of justice - an elongated iron tongue and a defensive helmet." - Kinga Araya

"Walking Around was indirectly inspired by my frequent personal displacements that had been occurring since I left Poland, in 1988. Since then I have lived in Italy, Canada and in Texas." - Kinga Araya

Tahoka presents not only an artistic homage to Native peoples land, but it also problematizes contemporary nomadic journeys that have been shaping the Texan historical and geographical contexts. The lonely and exhausting walk with a heavy suitcase across the lake, visually complements contemporary promenades that move in and out of different languages, histories, countries and cultures.

Interlocutions literally means "a conversation" and "dialogue". This video however presents ten short statements that are juxtaposed onto the bodies that are in slow motion. Thus the image and the fragmented conversations are disrupted and removed from the body. The only interlocutor, an old armchair, remains at the center of the black videotaped background. Its ambiguous presence seems to psychologically question the minimal movements performed by the subjects.

Poster for Exercising with Princess Headgear (Adjustable)

2000 · ★ 0.0 (0)

This video is an artistic interpretation of an actual performance that took place in the summer, 2000 on Mount Royal in Montreal. All the scenes of the video are in slow motion. Kinga Araya climbs wooden stairs to get to the top of Mount Royal. Dressed in black, she wears a beautiful, yet cumbersome and dangerous copper hat (adjustable refers to the copper band inside the Headgear to fit almost any human head). When she finally reaches the lookout, she continues to walk in a circle. She finishes her 'Royal Promenade' with a final spin, in the middle of this picturesque public space.

The video presents a story of two women: one circulates the streets of Montreal, the other is grounded and standstill in her private space. The images of women dwelling within the exterior and interior spaces are complemented by a narration recounted with a female voice. The poetic story is doubled up by an echo-like delay on a second audio track. This fact emphasizes the ambiguous character of the subject as one and/or many. The 2:30 minute long text is recounted mainly in English, but there are three short audio segments where Polish, Italian, English and French sentences are pronounced simultaneously creating an uncanny audio-cacophony. This new non-language enriches the ideas of walking on one hand, and on being grounded, on the other.

The video presents a self-portrait of a nomadic identity perfroming in one of the busiest Montreal intersections. The subject speaks four languages while cloning herself into a hybrid, shiva-like creature. The quadruple 'walk' and 'talk' is expressed in Polish, Italian, English, and French.

Poster for National Anthem

2002 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Three male native speakers endlessly correct a woman's foreign pronunciations of English, French and Polish. It seems that the absolute pronunciation of the national texts is represented at its best in the cacophony of three languages overlapping female and male recitations of the anthems. These nonsensical exercises of the mouths problematize the meaning of certain politically charged words.

During the 10:00 minutes of this silent video there is a close up image of the eye that most of the time looks straight into the camera lens. The eye occasionally blinks, looks down and is covered with an eyelid for a few seconds. It is a paradoxically peaceful video. There is a certain promise and visual tension that something is about to happen, but nothing ever happens. The image of the eye fades out to black after ten minutes. The question remains: is this videotaped omnipresent eye providential or ominous?

Poster for Artist Statement

2003 · ★ 0.0 (0)

A naked female figure faces the wall and hits it monotonously with towels. Formally the video refers to the photographic series showing prostitutes from the red light district in New Orleans made in 1912 by the American artist E.J. Bellocq. These photographed figures often turned away from the lens and had their faces blurred or veiled. Araya’s use of primary color also refers to her artistic beginnings as a painter.
