1992 · ★ 0.0 (0)

This is a portrait of 9-year-old Yacoub, a Palestinian who lives in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem. He studies English and French at school, and enjoys shopping at outdoor markets and helping at his uncle's falafel shop. He'd like to be free to go out and play with his friends without his parents worrying about his safety. As we accompany him in his daily activities, we see how his life is affected by the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

The voices of artist, poet, and archaeologist Estebán Valdés and Lares-born, self-identified indigenous countrywoman Pluma Bárbara carry us through the interior landscapes of Puerto Rico, sharing oral histories, ancestral knowledge, memories, and thoughts about how we create consciousness around our cultural identity. The film brings to the forefront histories about women who are bearers of great knowledge, innovation, and creation, along with moments of darkness that visually represent our gaps in knowledge due to racially and politically motivated erasure.

“When a heterosexual dude makes a film about his kids, that is very political. When a woman makes a film that engages with the act of being a parent, it’s often seen as less significant. That shows how political it is because even now, motherhood is a terrible double bind. When I was expecting my first child, I was told by more than one female filmmaker, ‘Forget it, you’re done, you’ll never make a film again.’” –Kathryn Ramey, in dialogue with Sarah Keller & Yangqiao Lu
