Poster for Self-Portrait

1971 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Access to video technology had largely been limited to corporate-run TV studios until the Sony Portapak, a battery-powered video tape recorder that could be carried by one person, was popularized in the early 1970s. This device also allowed artists to see what they were recording in real time and to immediately play it back, prompting investigations of technology’s increasingly fluid relationship to the body, language, and time itself.  Shigeko Kubota’s ”Self-Portrait” embodied the boundless potential of the new medium and the freedom from precedent it represented. This work, in which Kubota interacts with her own image, contains some of her earliest known experimentation with video. Here, she used new tools to manipulate the electronic signal, creating previously unimaginable colors and patterns, and unraveling established conventions of image-making right before our eyes. In the form of a digital stroll, this short uses images taken from the web to map Kinmen, the Taiwanese island and childhood home of artist Erica Sheu. Between reconstruction and digital composition, she retraces the island's landmarks and reflects on her relationship with her father against a backdrop of camouflage and military presence. A video diary emerges through these journeys, linking intergenerational memory, historical past, and anecdotes. Punctuated by a certain irony, don't be afraid let it show (true colors) captures the digital aesthetic, that of the poor image, to critically articulate a gesture of reconstruction.

This film subverts the introductory formula of the fairy tale, immediately blurring its temporality. The narration in Macedonian, superimposed on images shot in 8mm colour showing female faces, multiple landscapes, daily activities, and intimate moments, echoes the words of Ahmad Almallah, Norman Manea, and Gertrude Stein. Punctuated by short, evocative pieces of music, this film artfully revisits recurring topics in the filmmaker's work, such as memory, belonging, exile, and family. Nurtured by the mythology of Zora, the Slavic goddess of dawn, and inspired by the filmmaker's grandmothers, whose names make up its title, this short film pays tribute to women warriors throughout history.

"Isle Be Seeing You..." We combed the islands for an exotic beauty. And found her. Amidst the trees and sands of the big Island of Hawaii. Her name is Kahlia. She lives for lust. As a matter of fact, her name means "sensuality." And she means to prove it in Nancy Nemo's follow-up to her smash hit RainStorm. (Look out AVN--have your "A's" ready!)
