Juxtaposing two restagings of a melodramatic scene from Tommy, The Who's rock opera, Channeling analyzes the ways in which media cannibalizes, revises, and resurrects itself. In Donegan's almost psychedelic renditions, a silver-garbed, red-wigged performer capers in a theatrical non-space of foil, plastic, police tape, and rescanned video images of Tommy star Ann-Margret. In Channeling in 4 Versions, actress Garland Hunter enacts the scene, and then, in a silent version (Channeling in 5 Versions), Donegan herself takes the role.

Donegan eats her way layer by iconic layer through a white bread and KRAFT American Cheese sandwich — crafting hearts, stars, faces and bunnies as she goes. Through a strategic use of close-ups and an aggressive rock n'roll soundtrack, Donegan ironically probes the auto-eroticism inherent in the production and consumption of the "art object" in contemporary America.

A love that transports through time and place. Inspired by iconic NYC love scenes from the 1970's, and an ode to Maya Deren's MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON. This meticulous craft of cutting-on-action proposes a dance as if it were literally occurring in front of you, like a live performance.

A portrait of a day a woman spends with her young son while watching an abandoned hotel on the verge of demolition. It takes place during the dog days of summer, in the 13th year, when the cicadas are everywhere. A meditation on the line between isolation and solitude. Nature is both comfort and decay. Motherhood as both presence and erasure.

This video presents an algorithmic, generative, and software-driven dataset of images that runs in 15-hour cycles. The sequenced, glitched imagery derives from the brilliant and melodramatic Shanghai version of "Phantom of the Opera" made in 1937. For this video, the launching time of my original software occurs 23:55 (Sept. 20, 2015) just prior to midnight. At precisely midnight, an algorithm is designed to trigger the start of the central song of "Yeban gesheng" - the politically convoluted and emotionally intense "Song at Midnight".

The title is an oblique reference to Warhol’s The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again) where Warhol famously spoke of his understanding of death. He didn’t believe in it, he said. His work, perhaps as a result, is a constant celebration of presence. This piece, using a methodology diametrically opposed to Warhol’s own, revisits stray elements (a seagull, reflections of the filmmaker in the window, a blinking light and so on) that pass incidentally through that moment of monumental presence we experience in ‘Empire’.

The world as seen in a teardrop of milk. I set out to make a film about how unwitting constellations of meaning rise to a surface of understanding at a pace outside of worldly time. This premise became a self fulfilling prophecy. An unexpected interior began to unfold, made palpable by a trauma that remains abstract.
