Poster for The Clift Hotel

1970 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The Clift Hotel was made by positioning the camera vis-à-vis a hotel entrance; Hafif hoped to capture guests entering or leaving the building. As it happened, no one came or went during the window of time she had set for the shoot. Lively car traffic instead dominates the static shot. The passing vehicles lend the pictorial space a horizontal structure. The hotel’s architecture looks timeless and anonymous. The car models, by contrast, unmistakably date the film to the 1970s. Several drivers notice the camera as they slow down and gaze into it with an expression of bewilderment.

This film was shot during the last year of Daniil Dondurey’s life in Moscow and Tel Aviv, where he was receiving treatment. Dondurey’s monologue is broken up by city landscapes, the animated buzz of a café, the silence of an emptied dacha… Dondurey talks about his pursuits, encounters, and tastes; he recalls his student years in Leningrad. He jokes, smiles, and hopes.

Musician Catherine MacLellan—the daughter of Canadian singer/songwriting legend Gene MacLellan—grew up surrounded by her father’s music. He committed suicide when she was 14. The Song and the Sorrow follows Catherine as she journeys to understand her father and face her own struggles with mental illness. Through archival footage and intimate interviews with friends, family members, and musicians who knew and played with Gene—including Anne Murray, Lennie Gallant, and the late Ron Hynes—the film reveals a troubled and loving man who was never at ease with fame or money.

The tenderness of the initial images presents young girls of a school class praying, in a chorus, verses that thank the Lord for “all the wonders performed”. The Battle of Vertières took place on November 18, 1803 in the former French colony Saint-Domingue, now Haïti, and resulted in the independence of the first free nation of Latin America and the Caribbean.
