Poster for Pearl in Hades

1988 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Light reflecting on a dark water surface, a drop of light with blurred outline, the sea at night, illumination in the distance, a close-up of a lying female – these are basically all the objects that appear in this piece. Nevertheless, the scale of the story this simple composition weaves out is awesome. The first piece made after moving into Tokyo, this work sieves out Nishimura's negative feelings such as anxiety and solitude and the scent of death from the dark water face. So who is this lying woman, her blank gaze that at some moments gleam with light? The mystery deepens and interpretations expand. Nishimura's true masterpiece, aiming to make "film that the audience can conceive without strain".

Originally working with super 8 animation pieces, Noshioka switches on to video-making from 1991. From time control with frame shooting to gaze fix with live action filming, her technology and texture change greatly. This first work in video indeed straightforwardly defines the relationship between "living space" and "physicality". Through repetition of thundering and quietude, the power of Nishioka's pure solitude and intense observation turn and reshape the warmhearted town of Osaka into something hard and inorganic. The adherence to a suddenly rising unrealistic and gigantic vapor pillar, the ever-turning ventilation fan and the ever-watching eye – All of these are ways to love Osaka permissible only to this filmmaker.

On a Wing and a Prayer is a film inspired by the story of Abdul Rahman Haroun, who walked through the Channel Tunnel on 17th August 2015. Mr Haroun was held on remand for 5 months at Elmley Prison. He has since been released and granted asylum but was charged under the Malicious Damage act of 1861 for illegal entry into the UK. The language in this bylaw, when juxtaposed against the physical and emotional feat of traversing 30 miles of the Channel Tunnel supplies the terrain for this film.

Wallpaper is a performative documentary in which four generations of women in the artist’s family attempt to recreate a wallpaper design that was painted by Syed’s grandmother when the artist was a child. It features Syed, her daughter, mother, and grandmother, as well as her sister, artist-filmmaker Tanya Syed. Documenting the process in video and 16mm film, the five women take turns in the film’s technical roles (performer, director, camera operator), thus de-stabilizing the relationship between filmmaker and filmed subject, and the traditional generational hierarchy. The result is a self-reflexive and delicately layered film which deals with family, memory and subjectivity.

"Whilst I was studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, a like-minded colleague Peteris Kimelis and I decided to find people who still grew tea mushrooms. My memories of growing tea mushrooms were foggy - in my early childhood, on a table in the kitchen stood a three litre glass jar with a strange, see-through pancake that floated in brown water. In spite of its appearance, it was a drink that was far superior to all the Coca-colas and Fantas of today. We placed a notice in the newspaper, stating that we were looking for people that still used and grew the tea mushroom. In the end, the project became a notable advertising campaign for the good old tea mushroom - it was in the press, on television and on the radio. A documentary film was made about tea mushroom growers that was screened in a specially organised Tea Mushroom Shop that was set up right in the centre of Riga, where any passer-by could get a free baby tea mushroom in a test tube."

A pioneer in the genre of autobiographical documentaries, this film made by the renowned Cuban director Sara Gómez explores her family roots to offer a family portrait through photos, popular music, and women’s tales. It is also a powerful document of an age and a way of living: that of middle- or upper-class black families in Cuba, meeting in exclusive bars just before the Cuban Revolution.

Poster for May 2012

2014 · ★ 0.0 (0)

May 2012 is composed of three visual elements. In the momentary opening shot the camera spies on riverside joggers from the Donaumarina U-Bahn station. Inside a nearby care home, two elderly women are eating. One is the artist´s mother. She stares into the camera, from where a loving hand reaches out to caress her face. Finally, we see a Christmas pudding decorated and surrounded by candles, all afire. The scene is reminiscent of the flaming Christmas tree in Anger´s Fireworks but was in fact inspired by a viewing of Po zakonu (By the Law) by Kuleshov. The flames burn strongly and race out of control, causing the camera to become agitated, breaking free from its static point of observation, perhaps in panic. The film is characteristic of Friedl vom Gröller´s project to break down the separation between daily life and the making of art, being a particularly compelling example of her recent works that meditate on the process of ageing.

A pan along a gallery of large washing machines in a laundromat. Two women speak sign language and a third feeds coins into the machine. Language is made visible. Language is a craft and serves to interpret what is and what might perhaps be. A silent film from a mythical universe, a realm of women who ask questions and patiently and ironically question everything.
