"Tiny Plastic Rainbow" is a shifty narrative about trauma, aloneness and a dog with one eye. Set in a modern urban environment, TPR chronicles one day in the lives of seven adults. Each character is pathologically consumed by a purposeful sense of detachment and sorrow. This necessitates creative coping techniques and prevents any connection with each other or the phenomenal world that surrounds them. Their lives are solitary but synchronized. That is, although they do not specifically know each other, their paths cross constantly throughout the day. The audience becomes implicated in the crime of coincidence and missed opportunities. "Art Jones commissioned this piece for a show called “Word” which opens at Diverse Works in Houston this April. Each participant was asked to choose a particular article or essay in order to generate a visual/audio/virtual response. The work produced is a conversation between an artist and a writer. For Skin Job, I chose to respond to various articles contemporary theorist, Laura Kipnis has written about pornography. I am interested in the similarities between how she writes about sexualized female bodies and how many other contemporary writers address technology. We fetishize flesh in the same way that we fetishize machines. The text in the piece is an original haiku which suggests that the heroine is man-made—an android. She is a bionic woman with an unlikely sense of loneliness, sexuality and desire. She seems observed and disoriented in her empty, future space. This piece contemplates a virtual identity as it influences a sense of contemporary utopia. (...)"

In 1915 Walter D'Arcy Ryan induced explosions of color over the night sky as part of the Pan-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), a presentation the likes of which had never been seen prior, and which became the model for light displays at future World's Fairs and illumination showcases. One hundred years later, Kerry Laitala pays tribute to this historical moment with a dual-projector performance involving archival images of silhouetted spectators of the 1939 New York World’s Fair sharing screen space with sinuous light shapes swirling, twinkling and bouncing across the frame like unbound forces of energy. The City Luminous: Spectacle of Light will be accompanied by a live soundtrack by Voicehandler (Jacob Felix Heule and Danishta Rivero), who manipulate sounds from various sources including a mechanical music box from Switzerland.

This film is a travelogue in Chicago, which is also a study on color and black and white, the expired and the fresh film, and the fast and the slow pace. I was looking at the city in the snow through the Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero’s installation, Alphabet, on the window at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and wondering what the difference would be between shooting this grey scenery with color film and with black and white film. As Herrero creates a landscape with color blocks, what landscape would I create with my two rolls of film? - Erica Sheu

For a year at monthly intervals, Ute Aurand and Bärbel Freund filmed In the Garden, a lovely portrait of a Potsdam-Bornim garden designed in 1910 by gardener and philosopher Karl Foerster. An extraordinary variety of flora, natural lighting effects, textures and colors unfold in this gentle, expertly edited film, which forms a bridge between the natural world and the individual soul.
