This documentary film follows a small band of military commandos, members of the Afghan army who fight their country's enemies during predominantly night missions. A story of war, love, life and death, it is an unprecedented look at these elite fighters, and the hopes and dreams they have rarely spoken of until now.

The figure stood on the tops of two twenty-foot ladders, one foot on each ladder, and leaned against the outside wall of a warehouse. Two assistants took ten rolls of two-inch masking tape and stuck the figure to the wall, defying gravity, until sundown. –Jill Scott on Taped, 1975

"Our voices are not our own" explores the concept of voice as a physical and immaterial presence or absence, in relation to broken vocal cycles. Invisible figures wear drawn costumes, created for the film using a chemical-reflective, light-fibre fabric. Soft-pastels and fabric changes in the different light conditions and under flash everything becomes monochrome. The figures wearing these drawings are rendered ghosts, or ghosts of voices, only their shapes visible underneath. The film’s audio is created from distorting frequencies of various digital noises taken from text, email and messaging notifications in addition to breath and heartbeats.

A drone inhabited by the mind of a property developer arrives ‘top down’ from above and flies through the newly built residential neighbourhood in East London and gathers data at twilight. During the journey it maps the new utopian space it has built with its mechanical gaze, commenting and interacting with its findings, ‘We want to contain and retain our residents’. This is a place built in a bubble, controlled within the walls of developer’s billboards. Privately owned, East Village is awash with branding and reaffirming smiling faces. Purchase a luxury flat and buy into the services, life style and more. As the drone declares ‘Everything you need is here!’ With Westfield shopping mall on your doorstep, its ever present logo glowing like a beacon of hope, why would you ever want to leave?

With interests in the politics of architecture, voyeurism and urban planning, Garland’s latest work "Chobham" focuses on video and sculptural form. Engaging directly with the site of production at a new residential development in east London, "Chobham" is a wall installation that resembles shapes and forms found in architect’splans and models. The presence of whirling fans and small screen pulsating suns creates a rhythmic work that is inspired by the relationship between technology and simulation. This leftfield approach to technology allows Garland to explore illusion and perception. The grey materiality of the concrete casts is in contrast to the vibrant colour of the videos, reminiscent of advertising hoardings that frequent these new types of neighbourhoods. Playing with scale, Chobham’sminiature staircases and video-rendered sun-drenched balconies unpack elements of the developer’s vision where aspiration is sold alongside the mundane.

A single cartridge of Super 8 captures my mothers last visit to her garden. Her body is seen slowly dissolving towards illumination, while her image is forever immortalized in light and silver. Poem borrowed from the Wabanaki creation myth of the first woman, The Corn and Tobacco Mother.

This films follows the emotionally intense experience of Saghari staying in her mother’s room, sleeping on her death bed, and trying to experience her point of view by going through her mundane objects. "Ghazal no 884" by Poet Bidel Dehlavi is read by a friend, sent as a voice message on Whatsapp as soothing company to calm the grieving moment. Mirza Abdul-Qader Bidel (Bidel Dehlavi) was born in 1644 in (Azim Abad) Penta, India. The themes of his poems are influenced by multitudes of philosophies including Hindu, Sufi and Islamic traditions. Following the ideas of Ebn al-ʿArabī, he considered air (an aspect of nafas-e Raḥmānī, the breath of the Compassionate) to be the foundation of the world and spirit. Everything else –minerals, plants, animals –are viewedas the product of nature, which itself emerged from a single word brought into being through the articulation of “the breath of the Compassionate”.

Goodbye Pig / Goodbye Phil / Goodbye Sweet Things that Once Were. A reminiscence of an unknowable past. An homage to "'pigfill" aka "slug," a reinvented film, an invented manner of preservation. A found footage film constructed almost entirely of decayed/abused fill. The fill—once spliced into 16mm magnetic audio tracks of another film—had been stored in a wet basement. Water damage had caused the two to stick together. I was asked to replace the fill in order to transfer the audio to a digital medium for preservation purposes. I removed and spliced the bits of discarded picture together and projected it in an effort to gain some understanding of the original footage. Later I reprinted it, via the optical printer, fascinated by the bits of picture/past left unobscured by the residual blotches of mag, and in doing so I literally watched its continued demise; its further fall into chaos. In a film bursting with lyrics, pictures, and music the director shows us a way into the peculiar universe of Tóroddur, and the otherwise not very talkative artist gives us a glimpse of his thoughts on art, God, life and death.
