Over a hundred years since the publication of the sociological text, La mala vida en Madrid, that coined the term in Spain, what does it mean to be a ‘lowlife’? Eye-catching, almost otherworldy and unashamedly provocative, this commentary on class, sexuality and urban stratification appropriates the pathologising label of ‘Other’ to shine a light on the explosion of ‘lifeforms’ in the Spanish capital today. Featuring the clever use of 8mm to create a surreal, pseudo-documentary look that draws in and distances simultaneously, Madrid, Bad Life is a sophisticated and thought-provoking high-concept work.

Ice Spider is a collaboration between Saimaiyu Akesuk (Cape Dorset, Nunavut) and Cheryl Rondeau (Toronto, Canada). Inspired by Akesuk’s iconic drawing entitled Red Spider (2014), this experimental short employs the technique of stop-motion animation while making reference to the actual behaviour of the Arctic Wolf Spider, a genus of arachnid common across the North. Climate change has resulted in larger populations and increased predatory tendencies of this carnivorous and cannibalistic spider. This sci-fi influenced short animates the growing discourse around the ecological, political and cultural future of Canada’s Arctic. Background imagery was shot on location in Cape Dorset, Nunavut.

“With Lantouy the young German video artist Isabell Spengler pursues a work revolving around the magic perception of the real. The film creates a purely sensuous experience, a place in which the veiled and the unveiled rejoin. The stagnant waters of the Gouffre de Lantouy in the Departement Lot in Southern France form under the gaze of Isabell Spengler a theater of moving matter, in kind of a delicate iridescent explosion.” - François Bonenfant, La Cinémathèque Française, Paris, 2007

'Azul la mancha' deals with a rare form of taking root in a place. Our Spanish hometown in Castilla-La Mancha reveals vast, barren landscapes that are part of our collective memory. The images recall this deep connection to our motherland through objects, visions and traits that channel the heart and soul of this unique space.

We are looking through the mirror of time, into distorted memories, warped faces, collapsed homes. While several narrators tell us about the most vivid colors in their dreams. The film consists of a collage of 16mm found footage I further processed and decayed using a gentle combination of bleaching techniques. This process allowed me to partially lift the emulsion from the film base and re-shift it and re-position it by hand. The narration is from the anthology Dreams by Delia Derbyshire. -- F.F.

"Greater is the hatred that has inspired us, than the sea that separates us from it" reads one of the most significant sentences of Simón Bolívar's Letter of Jamaica. The work revolves around this phrase, whose words appear and disappear in the course of the sequence of images, disjointed from the cohesion that brings them together only at the end of the video to form that programmatic declaration that defends independence. The sentence is thus evidenced as a procedural symbolic knot, the result of a complex history and its possible articulations. The images of the video, in a constant swaying of a boat in the water, open up to the dimensions of the immensity of that sea that serves Bolivar as a metaphorization of the magnitude of the hatred that forces him to revolt against the colonizers. It is a sea in which is inscribed, in turn, a new history, which, as a possible reading, forces us to think of other colonizations and economic dependencies.

Numerous filmmakers and video artists have attempted, with varying success, to produce visual representations of memories. The eye of memory does not see things in the same way as the physical eye, and many artists have come to regret this difference. Aravena Abughosh's attempt belongs to the category of successes. He has managed to account for the fragmentary and associative character of memory; for the vague emerging and dissolving of images, and even for the feelings that are so intrinsically linked to it.

The film was made by the techniques of photogram and contact-printing 16mm, 8mm found footages on top of unexposed 16mm hi-con film. I am inspired by Man Ray and his rayographs -- "without a camera by placing objects-such as the thumbtacks, coil of wire, and other circular forms used here-directly on a sheet of photosensitized paper and exposing it to light". Man Ray extended the rayograph technique to moving images in "Le Retour à la Raison" (1923)
