Poster for Padauk: Myanmar Spring

2021 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Padauk: Myanmar Spring takes the viewer to the streets of Myanmar during the heady days following the February 2021 military coup. Through Nant, a young, first-time protester, we meet three human rights activists whose lives have been turned upside down by the coup. As the protests continue, Nant comes to understand the truth of a brutal regime that has continued to wage war against its own people for decades. Against a foreboding backdrop, Nant’s political awakening regarding the plight of others in her ethnically diverse country gives hope for the future. Beautifully augmented by poetry and art, Padauk: Myanmar Spring shows the resilience and determination of the people of Myanmar, and the sacrifices they've made.

Poster for ipsae i/ii

2021 · ★ 0.0 (0)

ipsae is the feminine plural of 'ipse', 'oneself', which relates to the concept of ipseity — an immediate, non-reflective experience of the self. Filmed over the last few years with the super 8 Ektachrome reels gifted by Katherina Thomadaki, it has been conceived either as four individual portraits, two diptychs or one single film. Within and between the glimpes of these women there also emerges a self-portrait of myself through my love for those who have shaped me, and an homage to the cinema of Klonaris and Thomadaki. ipsae i/ii is a diptych comprised of ipsae (abi) and ipsae (guillermina), which explores intergenerational identity.

A film about the creative process of actor Enrique Bustos, from the theatre company La Zaranda, in his search for a new character. At the same time, it’s a travel through the creative process of making the film itself, leading to a mirror game between actor and director —couple in real life—, where the borders of the quotidian get blurred to slide into a territory of memories and fabulations as part of the fight to conjure up the intangible.

In 1973, Wolf Vostell, an artist associated with Fluxus, made a happening in which participants were required to perform a series of ritual, obsessive actions, such as “go to the trunk of your vehicle, there open and close the trunk 750 times and 375 times put a white plate in it and take it out 375 times.” Described by Ottinger as a documentation of what Vostell called “dé-coll/age-happening”, the film is an illustration of her creative method, a surrealist act, a separate work of art, and a strange object. She would later describe her method as “fragments of reality assembled in an unusual manner”.

The film resembles a memory with its lacunes, blurriness and sensuality. This is what it seems one saw some months ago wandering around Los Angeles.

In Bulgaria, there is a tradition to inform about the passing of a person by means of a special announcement. Usually it is hung out in some public place - at a bus stop, on a fence or the front door of a house. Such a leaflet is called a Bulgarian street obituary. The camera turns out to be next to a Bulgarian family going through mourning, and spends one day in a local village.

Newsreels were one of the most powerful tools of Soviet propaganda. They also make up a significant part of the state film archives. In the newsreels, the recent past presents itself as a monolith of silent images, firmly stitched together by the narrator's voice and soundtrack subtly playing the viewer's feelings. It is exactly this original sound that the artist suggests to detach from. Just two or three minutes long episodes retain the original montage, which was meant to follow the upbeat narration. Flickering images of the past, which perhaps can only become enchanting to us today by revealing their muteness.

The camera observes and scales the surface, it captures details and long shots from different perspectives. A young director wants to direct a medieval film in the Paris suburbs. During the casting she concentrates on one single person. The parking lot in front of the theatre, on which the young actors are waiting their turn, quickly becomes the decor of the new scene. While inside the alienation between the director and her assistant reaches its climax, the dance of the "superfluous" begins outside.
