Clippy, 2016, 16mm transferred to HD, 3 minutes Alia Syed hones a moving image poem out of the personnel reminiscences of Mr Ghulam Rasul Tahir and Mr Mohammed Ali Azad whose lived experiences of working for Glasgow bus Corporation defy our expectations. Filming with a 16 mm camera on the Dumbarton Road in Glasgow, Syed responds to a shot she found in the archives of BBC Scotland of a funeral cortege walking through the same streets in 1969. An oral lament, by Hardeep Deerhe responds to the traditional Scottish tune 'When the Battle's O'er' (played by Ross Ainslie), creates an acoustic envelope to this haunting vignette.

Inside a black hole, rapid movements fill the void. Macroscopic corporal landscapes follow one after the other to percussion in crescendo. White skin pulsates serenely and black skin wiggles, showing a face. Bright discharges explode in the air. In a slow, swaying trance, a shining eyelid reveals and then hides a liquid eye. The swelling and contracting skin of an abdomen makes deep sounds to an unrelenting beat.

Poster for Psycho 60/98

Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock and Psycho (1998) by Gus Van Sant collide in a frame-by-frame editing that assaults the eyeballs and assassinates the normative consciousness of the viewer. The footage seems to penetrate us, as though it was a knife or a threatening phantasmagorical entity. The fast succession of single frames and extremely short audio files produce afterimages and aftersounds—entoptic and endaural phenomena—creating a film that does not happen on the screen, but in our brain cells
