Poster for What is Love

2012 · ★ 4.3 (3)

This film is a portrait of life, a portrait of people with varying life plans. It asks the meaning of life, about how to fill the gap between birth and death, and what is happiness. Short documentary pieces tell the stories of some very different protagonists of a generation: from the forest-owning family in their stately home to the factory worker following her daily routine.

Poster for Sex in an Epidemic

2010 · ★ 0.0 (0)

SEX IN AN EPIDEMIC is a pioneering documentary that explores the personal, political and structural challenges that have continually hampered the best efforts of HIV educators and community groups to curb HIV infection rates in the United States. It is a compelling history of the devastating early days of the epidemic in NYC, when men with "GRID" were a stigmatized population that died swiftly of a terrifying new disease. Few concepts have had as great an impact on sexuality over the past 28 years as that of "safer sex." Yet, as a concept, it is important to remember two things: first, safer sex had to be invented amidst an alarming lack of information that existed before the discovery of HIV in 1984; and second, safer sex as a concept had to be sold by the persistent and creative persuasion of community based groups all across the country.

A masterclass in the art of digital cinematography thanks to the efforts of Mexican maverick Nicolás Pereda (director of Perpetuum Mobile), it's a highly unusual 'behind the scenes' record of a film-shoot in Mexico City - namely, Michel Lipkes' Malaventura. Bussmann concentrates on the elderly gents who appear in one atmospheric bar-scene, observing them between takes and interviewing them about their lives. The gently-paced results cast a steadily hypnotic, and intoxicating spell.

In summer 2007 the New York Philharmonic received an invitation that was unprecedented in the orchestra's history. North Korea, the world's most isolated and secluded country and technically at war with the United States, invited the orchestra to play in the capital of Pyongyang. Just a few months later, two hundred orchestra members and more than one hundred journalists disembarked from a chartered plane at Pyongyang's deserted airport. They were about to experience a historic moment, the first-ever performance by an American orchestra in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
