Poster for From Danger to Dignity: The Fight For Safe Abortion

1995 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The film weaves together two parallel stories: the evolution of underground networks that helped women find safe abortions outside the law, and the intensive efforts by activists and legislators to decriminalize abortion through legislative and judicial channels. This film combines rare archival footage with interviews that document the courageous efforts of those who fought to break the silence, change the laws and end the shame which surrounded abortion when it was a crime. The film is the second of the Abortion Rights Film Trilogy.

3,824 kilometers in 57 days: in the summer of 2015, filmmaker Ayako IMAMURA, who was born deaf, started a bicycle journey through Japan. For her this was a physical challenge and an experiment in communication. Having felt frustrated when communicating with hearing people, she decided to confront the problem head on, exploring not only her country, but also herself in this documentary road movie.

Adolescence is a particularly intense moment in the exploration of the self. Doubt, anxiety, the search for one’s identity and one’s relationship to the world give way to a discomfort typical of the passage from childhood to adulthood.

A cardboard box with a pinhole in one end and a sheet of vellum on the backside, so that the sun fluttering among the trees is projected onto it. This moving image edit is derived from about 4 or 5 takes on the day venus was to cross the sun's path. As it turned out I got the day wrong, but it wouldn't have mattered as the image that formed on the vellum was so soft and wispish and the trees were in the way that there was no chance whatsoever venus could be seen passing by.

Poster for A Perfect Pair

1987 · ★ 5.0 (1)

A Perfect Pair posits the idea that individual consumers are walking billboards for the products they use; product slogans and brand names peeking out from every crevice and cranny of the actors’ bodies. Export demonstrates how the body of the consumer, especially that of the female consumer, is co-opted by commercialism. In tongue-in-cheek fashion, A Perfect Pair celebrates the modern-day co-mingling of fetish objects, as a body builder seduces a prostitute at a bar saying, “Your eyes are the most beautiful blue ad-space. Your cheek could promote a Mercedes. Your neck could be a slogan for styled technology.” Export’s work is centered around the evolving role of women in a culture where images increasingly displace material reality. A Perfect Pair wonderfully illustrates the inescapability of advertising’s “regime of signs", the signifying network of personal and product values that is effectively encoded on the space of women’s bodies.

On the one hand: A frame - and then windows in the frame - Spiked - from one to the other - Images designated - fenced, inside / out. Every moment broken - repeated. Always past. One after the other. Cruelty of the open boundary itself - and immediately some untimely object comes up against it - clog the sight - obliterate the frame. On the other hand: The note pursues an eternal moment. It's his game, run the frame, draw the embrasure, and so on. (...) she passes. Immediately in it she plays with nothing. Immediately outside she finds.

Catalogue is a series of 16mm films and videos that consider the time it takes to look at desirable objects, in this case, the objects for sale in a mainstream furniture catalogue of knockoff designs. Catalogue Vol. 4 takes the “Lighting” catalogue as its subject and uses a pulse of electronic sound and light to rep- resent each fixture, shot in the order that they were found in the original catalogue. The intervals of black were derived by a matter of taste: items that the filmmaker found less appealing were excised from the sequence.
