The mongrel Lyolik becomes a witness to the arguments between his young owners, and attempts to reconcile them. Lyolik is a very unusual dog: he talks (ruminates, to be more precise) offscreen, in the tones of a street hoodlum to boot, which is no surprise since he spent his early childhood on the streets. Lyolik is not indifferent to his owners, and tries with all his power to help them with their problems. But alas, all that people hear is a dog’s barking…

Untitled is the first of over 100 films created by Ana Mendieta. By scratching and painting directly onto the film’s emulsion, she formed a filmic painting of fields of dancing colors, comprised of vibrant strokes of blue and splashes of red. Though Mendieta experimented with various technical processes, this is the only moving-image work in which she manipulated the film’s surface.

Over two hours of rare performances, interviews, animations, and experimental video. Milton Babbit’s discussion of the difficulties of working with archaic synthesizers in the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in the 1950s and ’60s is a firm reminder of just how foreign electronic sounds were to even the academic community only 40 years ago. Likewise, Paul Lansky’s private lesson with theremin inventor Leon Theremin is an example of how non-user friendly electronic musical instruments could be, even to people who should have the best sense of how to approach them.

The Children of the Noon deals with the universal subject of life. Daily activities mark the passage of time for the children and teenagers in the orphanage in the small Kenyan village of Nchiru. It soon emerges that the fact they are orphans and the genteel poverty they share are not the only problems that unite them and determine their days.
A sudden death of one of them breaks the narrative rhythm and changes all points of view, intertwining a dense web of pains and joys, friendships and hopes.

Tar pits form as petroleum seeps to the surface through fissures in the Earth’s crust, leaving viscous asphalt pools. To make Tar Pits Film, Jennifer West threw a strip of film into the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, still-bubbling asphalt pools which have seeped from the ground for tens of thousands of years. The film was then ridden over hot asphalt by a motorcycle and drenched in other substances including thick mayonnaise and body lotion.

Hand-drawn animated short reconstructing, frame by frame, a brief section of mobile phone footage of Michael Brown, who was murdered by police in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. Brown's body lay on the hot pavement for four hours after being killed; the film is an attempt to make some meaning of that time. By drawing and redrawing the mobile phone footage, time is reinvested into the image, as an homage and to add value. The frames have been worked over and over, causing the paper to tear and to rupture, almost resembling burning, recalling the violent protests and fires that broke out after the murder, as well as historical lynching fires.
