Poster for ANIMAL CONDENSED>>ANIMAL EXPANDED#2

2018 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The director couldn’t have anticipated the coronavirus epidemic, but here is a near-future world in which a middle-class protagonist lives indoors, congratulating himself on the economic virtues of having ingested ‘animal condensed’ – an unexplained substance that seems to merge human and animal – and its benefits to his comfortably alienated life. “It optimises, it abstracts… it made us safe, here at home, with our accelerated portfolios”, he explains. Upstairs, his daughter virtually reconfigures Peppa Pig. Outside, meanwhile, hiding in the forest, is an unnamed, camouflaged fugitive, who explains her escape from a society that seems to have happily abolished the distinction between organic and technological life. An artist who has become a guerrilla fighter, the woman is busy preparing totem-like countermeasures to disrupt those who have become ‘animal expanded’.

Poster for The Charcoal Alley

Behind the hostel and bustle of shopping malls in Tajrish, a bazaar in north of Tehran, where the old meets the new, there is an old street where time seems to have stopped. Here is Koocheh Zoghali (Charcoal Alley) with its old school public bath, the second hand shops with all sorts of bric- a- brac and only one actual charcoal shop remaining from the old days. Above them all is a huge crane casting its shadow on the street like a giant about to devour the old narrow alley. In the sound interviews, one of the shop keepers predicts a future. He describes an image of chaos, protests and riots. Only few month passes and as I am editing the film, those imagined images come true in streets. The sound of real chaos from the streets in October 2019 sits right after the sound of prediction few months ago. When you shoot, you never know what might come true and what not.

In a remote training camp in Butler County, Ohio, we meet school teachers who are learning how to shoot, and if necessary, kill. This feature documentary explores the heated and divisive debate around how best to protect pupils, as schools prepare for gun attacks and school boards in America seriously consider arming their teachers. The film follows a group of teachers who attend FASTER, one of America’s most controversial summer schools where teachers are trained to use guns, deal with potential school shooting scenarios and if the situation demands it, kill.

I remember that I once tried to go far away to be a monk again. I didn’t know which temple to go to. I just wanted to find a temple. So, I choose another direction instead of going to the city. I walked from 4pm to 8 pm, it was gradually getting darker. With cars coming and going, I started walking aimlessly on the road…’ It is a project of a tracking record about a young man who planned to be a monk after 108 days. I got involved in the life of the protagonist, influenced some of his choices, and then I attempted to utilize subjective monologue to construct a narrative, coupled with his personal situation, his experience in the journey and his surroundings. ‘The Cassock’ is an intersection between the truly recorded video and non-fictional phone text. My interference of the events and supposition of its future progression are also included.

A new observatory, the ALMA, is going to be constructed close to an Indian village established in the same Cordillera for centuries. The film questions the co-existence on the same territory of two visions of the sky: scientists’ "rational" view and the Indians’ "magical" one.

Using video, sculpture and archival material, the work gives form to a dramatic event that took place in 1993 during the war in Bosnia, when a paramilitary unit abducted 20 people from a train. Hito Steyerl has made her mark on the international art scene as one of the sharpest observers and innovators in the documentary genre. In her critical perspective on documentary, the only objective truth appears to be the lack of information. On this basis, Steyerl examines the role played by the image production process – of which she is herself a part – and technological tools as witnesses to the truth when we write our common history.
