Erno Fisch, the film's protagonist, was born in 1903 in Sighet, the same small town as his world-famous compatriot, Elie Wiesel. Erno Fisch was the only Jew in his town that survived the Holocaust. He escaped deportation by hiding in the forest for six months. From his memories, we find out about everyday life in the area, which later became a part of Romania. Erno Fisch lived in an era when being Jewish did not mean being different, and when he could go to a Catholic school, just because it was closer. His life-story exemplifies the fact that resignation is not the only answer to the challenges of life and history.

In MOUNTAIN—made at the Experimental Television Center—abstract shapes and signals overlay and intersect each other. Some shapes move as if manipulated by hand, while others seem to morph smoothly as if computer- animated. At times, the sound is visible as pure signal while at others it seems to have a color.

How many ways can the human body be divided into two parts? Top and bottom, left and right, up and down… For every part of the body, artist Anna Vasof devises a surprising, witty gag of separation and reversal, executed with seamless digital effects. Then she extends the game to the body’s relationship with mobile phones, pandemic masks – anything with which we interact. As in all her work, Vasof makes the familiar deeply unfamiliar.

Barge Dirge is an experimental short that ponders death and industrial decay, a tense and mournful tone piece that imagines the rubble of humanity long forgotten. While Joyce Weiland’s iconic Sailboat bobbed freely on pale blue waters, McIntyre’s rusty barge rots trapped in frozen arctic permanence; heavy, unmoving, abandoned. As frozen mechanical flotsam flashes on screen we are left to wonder what, exactly, is being mourned? Perhaps community? A way of life? Our environment? Humanity itself? Barge Dirge challenges notions of legacy and memory by presenting us with only the ugliest remnants of humanity, preserved in a boundless frozen wasteland.
