Bitter Herbs and Honey tells a richly textured story of the making of multi-cultural Australia. Through the saga of the the story of the Jewish migrants, mainly from Eastern Europe, who made their first home in Melbourne's inner-city suburb of Carlton, the film explores issues at the heart of Australia's development towards cultural diversity. The film builds a picture of poor immigrants who left Europe in the period of turmoil preceding, and in the wake of, the Second World War, having lost everything spiritually and materially. In a country most had never heard of on the other side of the earth, they began to rebuild their lives.

Lacuna: 1. an empty space or a missing part; a gap; an absence. 2. a discontinuity in an anatomical structure.
Different textures of grief and acceptance emerge and the camera eye becomes a lens into the interior. Space is inhabited by memory; memory becomes a gesture that seeks the past.
Lacuna is a poetic meditation that navigates a landscape of absence, memory and transformation through image and sound.

Through the interview with Captain Heebok Ahn (Korean Air), the film reviews the current working condition and cosmic radiation exposure of the aircrews by comparing the case to a historical industrial accident of the 1920s: Radium Girls. The film suggests that there will always be victims of technological progress and labour complexity. Still, most victims on such occasions are often the most vulnerable people of late capitalism, in this case, women.

A fake documentary quoting 《A Little Princess》 (by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1905) to depict young, precarious museum workers living in an unstable working environment. When the night comes, a woman who works at a nearby museum goes on a weasel hunt in Jungnang River to earn pocket money. Young, highly educated female workers who move between short-term contracts and part-time jobs may be the girls in ermine coats, but the film suggests that they are the ermines for a coat.

This video suggests a dialogue between two buildings : on one side, the empty wall of 212, rue du Faubourg, and on the other, the view from a work room. A busy neighbour, a woman, accentuates the passage of time and the sound relates the presence/existence of a world outside the frame.

A fantasy using hand movements, involuntary gestures, attitudes and habits. With the absence of words, these movements become choreographies. A musical passage alerts them and guides them like a punctuation, or carries them towards unexpected fictions. At times calm, curious, anxious or very nervous, a parrot appears among the various monologues and dialogues which form and come undone...

In this interview, illustrated with these works and with other key installations including Socle du Monde and Corps étranger, Mona Hatoum explores the diverse sources of her work and her engagement with a wide range of often surprising materials. The artist talks vividly about the centrality of the body to her installations, and the ways in which her work employs changes of scale, intimations of restriction and constraint, and contradictory ideas of attraction and repulsion.
