Prominent filmmaker, artist and actress Mania Akbari reclaims her body—and that of all the other women in Iranian film. Using almost a hundred excerpts spanning Iran's film history, from the silent era to just after the Islamic Revolution—films that have all since been banned—she tells a story of liberation, exploitation, emancipation and ultimately oppression.

"This film is a collaborative installation project with Orleans + Winder (Detroit). It examines Nathaniel Dorsky’s writings on Self-Symbols in film as applied to the exhibition and personalization of clothing. Dorsky writes: If you have ever looked at your hand and seen it freshly without concept, realized the simultaneity of its beauty, its efficiency, its detail, you are awed into appreciation. The total genius of your hand is more profound than anything you could have calculated with your intellect. One’s hand is a devotional object."

“While shooting my feature documentary film, Memory, in April of 2021 in Grozny, Chechnya (the birthplace of my mother and where I grew up), I felt the influence of the gigantic portraits of Putin, Kadyrov Senior and Kadyrov Junior all over the city. They observed me from everywhere. In parallel to the production of the film, we set out to capture the feeling of totalitarianism that these portraits conveyed. We got up at 4 in the morning and shot through the window of a car because such actions put us under threat of persecution. We understood that we were documenting the time of the birth of fascism in Russia.” Vladlena Sandu

The documentary refers to five contemporary trans people’s testimonies of living in Sweden. These persons are between 17 and 70 years old. The film highlights their stories of life’s different journeys. One describes themself as a binary trans person, another as a man with trans experiences and a third as neither a man nor a woman but non-binary, beyond gender. One may dream of the day when the gender confirmation surgery is complete while another feels it’s enough to express their gender using hormones.

It's time now just to live. Just love each other with the highest power of pure feelings. This movie started many years ago. When we began to shoot it we could hardly imagine how this drama would end. Back then, Lena, mother of three, living Russian soul, divorced the father of her kids Yura and married a murderer sentenced to life imprisonment. What was it? Now, after painful challenges, becoming husband and wife again, Lena and Yura, simple rural aristocrats of the spirit, once again amaze us with the depth of their introspection, delicacy of feelings, with humor and sadness about things that will never happen.

Objets-monde is interested in the traces that humans leave on the environment as well as the way in which these become an intrinsic part of our ecosystem. Abandoned objects, such as cars and computer screens, were captured with the help of photogrammetry to create a video collage composed of extracts from reality. Re-contextualized in disproportionately large proportions within landscapes seen from afar, these objects stand out like the ruins of monumental architecture. The absence of life as well as the luminous atmosphere of the work create a tension between apocalyptic feeling and nostalgia, between precious object and waste, between idealized nature and the indelible presence of human traces. These vestiges of the Anthropocene are deployed within an interactive installation in collaboration with Guillaume Arseneault, and a soundtrack composed by Roger Tellier-Craig. This is the single-channel version of the project.
