Amie Siegel’s work often focuses on making visible the behind-the-scenes, unconscious operations of complex systems, investigating how value is constructed as her protagonists—archeological artifacts, furniture, paintings, marble, labor—move from one context to another, one time period to another. The artist’s recent research brought to light a trove of dormant 16mm film reels in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s storage that document scientific expeditions dating from the 1930s to 1970s. In Panorama, Siegel uses these source films of specimen field collection and the creation of the museum’s dioramas, along with her own contemporary footage, to create an entirely new, autonomous work of art.

A symphony of the animal park where the rhythm of jazz are crisscrossed with unforeseen movements and games between animals with the means of in-camera editing. This work was one of the favourites of Lidia García Millán, who deeply investigated the importance of sound in cinema. From this concern came her choice to make a type of non-narrative cinema, where sound (incidental in some of her works) was given special prominence. At the time, this led to disagreements among Uruguayan film culture agents, who sought to create a national cinema geared towards Europe. Thanks to feminist genealogies, her work is now considered a historical reference.

A feminine character stages fragments of paintings through dance. The metaphoric body constitutes the essence of this artwork. Two narrations are conjugated in the present and in the past : one speaks of the human quest for survival and the threat of man's intervention in nature, while the other evokes a wild nature where characters and animals are emerging. Paintings of Caravagio, Della Francesca, and Douanier Rousseau overlap the two accounts.

Roughly translated terroir can mean a sense of place and coming from a place. This piece is an image/sound portrait of a personal geography as well as formal investigation of digital media. Captured entirely on a cell phone, the camera records a landscape in constant motion and disintegration. This fluctuating image is married to a sound-scape that grasps for connection that reaches over distance. It is generated from the messages left by friends and loved ones on my cellphone over the course of several years. The raw material of both image and sound come from the same place, the cell phone, which I use to record the environment around me as I move across the Canadian landscape. Rarely does one stay where one is born, we move, modern life almost necessitates it. This piece explores notions of communication and distance, technology and intimacy.

Anomie was inspired by the disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It also concerns the excesses of capitalism, which have brought us to an unstable and uncertain period in history. Neo-liberal policies and economic globalization have exacerbated the social inequalities we see today. As its title suggests, the video explores the concept of anomie – in the broadest sense of the term – developed by Émile Durkheim. This concept defines the state of a society characterized by the disintegration or disappearance of shared values and norms.
