Poster for Abjecting

2019 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Abjection is a complicated, multifaceted concept that this person is going to do a much better job of beginning to explain than me. It explores how we define ourselves as living and where that border is. Things that are abject exist on that border; hair, menstrual blood, shit, fur skins and ultimately, corpses. Demarcating what is alive and what is not.

The industrial site, the dam under construction and the colony of workers’ housing attached to them are among the favourite spaces of the Sahia documentary, especially during the last decade of the communist regime. The work on the country’s numerous industrial sites is a constant theme included in the annual Thematic Plans of the studio, therefore repeatedly fixed on film and repeatedly missed, or at least simplified by the documentaries of the time, always completed under the pressure of the political imperative.

Hafif's second feature is another montage of film and voiceover narration. Hafif created it after she travelled to India with Robert Morris where the two visited workshops of local stonemasons. For the soundtrack, the artist drew on entries in her travel diary and other notes. The various textual fragments gradually coalesce around a common thematic core: the critique of a linear construction of time, which is implicitly associated with Western modes of thinking.

Two families in Awat County, southern Xinjiang, China, the Uyghur family of Aierken and the Han family of Guan Xiaoyan, make a living by growing cotton. During the busy cotton picking season, they encountered various unexpected situations such as difficulty in finding harvesting hands, injuries, and continuous rain. But with the concerted efforts of their respective family members, the year's hard work of the two families finally paid off satisfactorily. This film uses the shooting and narrative style of real movies, with the connection of local folk songs and music, as well as the exotic audio-visual language, to show the real life texture and simple family values of Xinjiang cotton farmers in an idyllic way.

Poster for Making Noise ~ The Story of a Skatepark

2018 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Making Noise chronicles the long struggle of the skateboarders of Northfield, Minnesota, to secure a permanent place for their sport. Shot in close collaboration with the latest generation of skateboarders, the film follows their efforts as they meet with city officials to fundraise, envision, and design a skatepark that seems to fit nowhere. A voiceover narration recorded by the skaters and based on city records, reveals the inefficiency of a process slowed down by outdated stereotypes about skateboarding and a thinly veiled resistance to the skateboarders. The film calls into question Northfield’s open-minded and friendly reputation in light of the community’s delay to find a place for its own youths. Making Noise bears witness to young people’s resilience and perseverance as it exposes the victories and failures of the civic process in small town America.

Inspired by Wilhelm Jensen’s Gradiva and Sigmund Freud’s essay on it, as well as by the empty squares painted by Giorgio de Chirico. The uncanny atmosphere of summer noon in Ermoupolis. The film is a fusion of fiction and documentary, essay and performance. It develops the theme of Grandiva but also records the process of teaching film to young performers during the Summer Academy of the National Theatre of Greece. The narrative units of the film are simultaneously exercises on film acting, as well as live performances that took place in the urban space of Ermoupolis, on the Greek island of Syros, in the summer of 2006.
