Michelle Handelman’s new work, THESE UNRULY AND UNGOVERNABLE SELVES (2020), recontextualizes characters from her previous works into a hypnotic visual essay about the transfiguring of interiority during periods of isolation and fear. It takes as its starting point the current coronavirus pandemic and filters it through theorist Jill Casid’s writings on the necrocene, and Walter Benjamin's writings on identifying the difference between threshold and boundaries. Handelman's characters, who each have already struggled with existential questions of belonging and fear in her projects DORIAN, A CINEMATIC PERFUME (2009/11); IRMA VEP, THE LAST BREATH (2013/15); and HUSTLERS & EMPIRES (2018), are juxtaposed with found images and texts sourced during the pandemic to take on a new form that both denies and struggles with containment.

One Thousand and One Attempts to Be an Ocean reflects on the experience of not being able to see the world with depth perception. Made up of micro-events from "satisfying video" that swarm on the internet, the abstract narrative unfolds through an appropriation way by referring to trance and minimal music. It's about a desire for groundless waves, blended with today's inexorable entropy of our information societies.

Ayoung Kim’s enchanting film Petrogenesis, Petra Genetrix (2019) takes the viewer on a journey through hyperbolic mythology based on a fictional genderless mineral Petra Genetrix. Through this character, Kim explores the Mongolian animist belief that positions land, mother rock, stones, and sacred caves at the center of their universe. By likening rocks and stones as the Earth’s memory storage vessel, the work illuminates the futurist potential of animism: “Quartz can be considered to be a type of natural computer since it absorbs and stores a large amount of energy“. The traditional spirituality oriented towards land or ancient animism reveals the potential equivalence between primeval objects and the futuristic memory sphere.

Filmed in extreme close-up, the lit-up pine needles of a Christmas tree are abstracted into forms of line and contrast. “Christmas Tree” then moves around the living room to focus on JoAnn Elam stringing popcorn, a playful dog, a tapestry on the wall, and a curly-haired man playing guitar.

At the end of June 2019, a flood occurred in the city of Tulun in the Irkutsk region. Hundreds of homes were flooded, and some were swept away by the current. Residents were not prepared for such a scale of the disaster and managed to pick up only the documents and take out the children. Many remained on the roofs of their homes to protect property from looters. But the water level rose higher than expected, and people were evacuated on their boats, picked up neighbors, and later rescuers joined the evacuation. There are fatalities among the population. The authors of the film chose four families and watched their lives for six months from the moment of the disaster. The filmmakers are trying to figure out what caused the flood. How helpless is a person before the elements? How to find the strength to start life with a clean slate?

For Cesena Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Rosas worked closely with Björn Schmelzer and his graindelavoix ensemble. This new production might almost be called the counterpart to its predecessor, En Atendant. Whereas in that piece the twilight merged almost imperceptibly into night, this piece heralds the start of the day. The stage is shared by 19 dancers and singers who explore the limits of their ability. Dancers sing and singers dance, once again in dialogue with the wilful 14th-century scores of the Ars Subtilior. For the third time, Ann Veronica Janssens has collaborated with Rosas for a set design, providing a sculpture of passing time, of the constant transformation of what is around us and of what only becomes visible in the course of time. The start of a new day, or a new look at a distant past.
