2018 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The portrait of a pigeon breeder named Hossam, and a look at the culture of the Kashasheen in the city of Amman, Jordan. The recreational breeding of pigeons is widely practiced in several countries of the Levant. The Kashasheen will train their birds to fly and to follow their directions given by whistles, calls, and movements. After having soared high and far in the sky, they will always come back to rest with their master. It is a sport of patience and contemplation, based on building a bond of trust between the Kishash and his horde of birds.

In the film, three young Israelis confront themselves with their and thus their shared German-Jewish history. They try to restore the apartment of the Jewish Adler family to the way it looked before their deportation. But it turns out that the Holocaust means something different to them than it does to the German director who invited them to travel back in time.

This early video document is Kubota's answer to the question, "What happens if you travel with a portapak instead of American Express through Europe?" Spontaneous, low-tech and infused with a spirit of uncensored adventure, Kubota's video travel diary is a personal and cultural time capsule of Europe and its subcultures in the 1970s. Among the taped entries in Kubota's journal: an Amsterdam street musician/beggar, a Parisian sex cabaret, a gay theater troupe in Brussels, a ritualistic performance art piece, and a hallucinatory video trip along the Champs Elysees. The diary culminates in Kubota's homage to Marcel Duchamp at his grave in Paris.

Poster for Hope In My Heart – The May Ayim Story

1997 · ★ 0.0 (0)

The film presents a portrait by Maria Binder of May Ayim, Ghanaian-German poet, academic and political activist. May Ayim was one of the founders of the Black German Movement, and her research on the history and present situation of Afro-Germans, but also her political poetry, made her known in Germany and in other countries. May Ayim wrote in the tradition of oral poetry and felt a strong connection to other Black poets of the diaspora. Poetry gave her an opportunity to confront the white German society with its own prejudices. The film shows the author in performances in South Africa and in Germany. Interviews and poems reveal the search for identity, how and why the term Afro-German was introduced and how a young Black woman experienced the German unification. May Ayim lived from 1960 to 1996. In Berlin, a street which had the name of a colonialist was renamed in 2010 after May Ayim.

Poster for Little Ethiopia: Chez Nous

2020 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Joe Bini and Maya Daisy Hawke, both veteran editors, invite you into their home as they confront their own relationship catharsis. What ensues is a live cinematic dialogue that uses personal videos, photographs, and repurposed films they have edited in the past with directors like Werner Herzog and Lynne Ramsay. The performance takes its title from the eponymous residential area of Los Angeles where the couple used to live—imbuing it with a mythical feeling, like Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive. We follow the open-ended editing process as it happens. Conflicting perspectives normally patched over in the editing room are revealed to us. In contrast to a film, which at a certain point is deemed finished and gets “locked,” this story keeps on developing. Like life itself, the edit remains endlessly open to change.

Poster for K (Rêves Berbères)

2007 · ★ 0.0 (0)

In this part, I'm dealing with the relationship of the Kabyles with the dream of elsewhere. To reach that aim, I shot a lot in Kabilye, and also in other countries. Through superimposition, the approach between the positive and the negative, tape-to-film work, a research into colour and some very tight editing in which I intercalate some articles about the kabyle cauldron, as well as other effects, I try to give shape to these visions of an elsewhere, that are passing, changeable, often false. While printing the film, I worked a lot on the diaphragm, going voluntarily from overexposure to underexposure, in order to render the blindness (that is the fever) and the ignorance of some populations about this elsewhere that they believe is an El Dorado.
