Habiba Djahnine went to meet activists who continue to take action. To meet them, to capture them in the spaces where they live, work or fight. They inscribe a few words of our tormented history. Memory, memory gaps, background noise, demonstrations... The film bears witness to 20 years of political mobilization/repression in Algeria.

Elen Řádová and Tomáš Mašín’s student work draws on the genre of action films, which are characterized by emotionally intense and violent scenes. Excerpts from period blockbusters are supplemented with visual effects and edited in a way that drives the particularities of the action film genre to the point of absurdity. The resulting visual whirlwind thus deliberately escalates—and thereby diminishes—the dramatic impact of the original footage.

Poster for Dada's Daughter

2022 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Dada’s Daughter is an expanded cinema performance comprising 16mm projections, cinema-objects and a live score. The performance is introduced with hand-developed black and white 16mm photograms made from the imprints of microplastic stars, tacks, jewelry and industrial scrap metal. This process of exposing objects onto celluloid is drawn from Man Ray’s “rayographs,” produced as early as 1923. Spliced in between these images are sections of clear film leader that cue a live performance re-animating the cinema-objects used to create the photograms. When placed in front of the projector these objects create tactile optical images; impressions of form, shape and pattern that reenact the photogramming process. The presence of the photogram reel and performative qualities of this work highlight the tension between ontological concepts of cinema—the material and the ephemeral.

One woman and one black cat share a city life together. This life is pleasant and relaxed sometimes, while sad and lonely at other times. The protagonist feels every minute detail in life, and senses the warmth and glitter of life in the briefest of moments. This film takes inspiration from classic French cinema. The director captures the lights and shades of a city and the feeling of solitude with black and white sketches and colorful pastels. The film aspires to be a poem, a brisk song, and a gift to every “one” living alone in cities.
