This installation, like so many others, is outdoors. It cannot really be seen, for its primary object, will, if looked at directly, burn, damage, even ruin the eyes. You look, instead, around the place. You see that object, that light, reflected in others—on their skin, in their hair, like illuminated masks or veils. This, for some, is enough. For others, it causes only frustration. Wanting to get to the origin of this light, this heat, but unable, some will approach these others not as secondary and adequate sources of light, but instead as objects in the way. “Viewers” will, therefore, do one of two things: either they will admire one another, or they will seek to destroy one another. Meanwhile, the installation, the source, burns on, unseen. Julie Carr, Real Life: An Installation

A task force of over 20 ships and more than 350 aircraft slipped out of Hitokappu Bay off the northern coast of Japan. Sadao Chigusa was a lieutenant commander on the destroyer Akigumo. The top-secret mission was intended to destroy the U.S. Navy and crush America's fighting spirit. The destination of the task force was the empty sea, 230 miles to the north of Hawaii. This was within striking range of the American fleet. From here the Japanese would launch the biggest aerial attack in history. Pearl Harbor was no simple target. It was one of the most secure military bases in the world. No one thought it would be attacked from the sea. Nobody dreamt it would be attacked from the air. Wars are not won with luck or firepower. Much like a great game of chess, wars are won with strategy. Uncover the strategy that guaranteed victory, or defeat, in some of these most decisive battles of modern history.

Both raised with Catholicism to varying degrees and both devout femme dykes, their relationship weaves the symbolism and practices of the church with BDSM and service to mine the complicated, painful history of religion’s relationship to queerness for intense explorations in suffering and intimacy. Eroticising shame has always been used as a powerful tool for healing and freedom in queer spaces, expanding what sex and intimacy can mean and be outside of straight normatively leads to deep explorations in bonding and trust outside of societally prescribed doctrine. Sex can mean and be and do many things and it can be written and rewritten according to need, a tool used to explore rather than something functional and fixed.
