Poster for KiyaKiya

2011 · ★ 0.0 (0)

— The term "KiyaKiya" comes from the old Japanese expression "mune ga kiyakiya suru." I first encountered it in Shibusawa Tatsuhiko's book Introductory Essays on Girls, in the chapter about "childhood experiences." The expression, which describes “an enigmatic, nostalgic, disturbing feeling,” or an impression of “deja-vu”, is at the origin of my "KiyaKiya" series. — This is one of my memories. When I was a child, there was a book I always used to read when I went to the hospital. One day as I was reading it as I always did, suddenly the ending had changed. Sometime later, when I read it again, it had returned to normal. — In our everyday routine, there are moments when suddenly we feel like something is different; this unexpected change, like in my memory, feels like it has a kind of reality. This impression is at the core of “KiyaKiya” and the related painting and drawing series. —

In 1984-85, people at Lake Tahoe fell ill with flu symptoms, but they didn't get better. Medical literature documents similar outbreaks: in 1934 at LA county hospital, in 1948-49 in Iceland, in 1956 in Punta Gorda, Florida. The malady now has a name, chronic fatigue syndrome, and filmmaker Kim Snyder, who suffered from the disease for several years, tells her story and talks to victims and their families, and to physicians and researchers: is it viral, it is psychosomatic, is it one disease or several (a syndrome) ; what's the CDC doing about it; what's it like to have a disease that's not yet understood? Her inquiry takes her to Punta Gorda and to a high-school graduation.

Poster for Fidelio - Beethoven - Opernhaus Zürich 2008

2008 · ★ 0.0 (0)

Translucence, transparency – warmth’ are the qualities identified by Bernard Haitink as necessary for an ideal sound performance of Beethoven's only opera, and all are present in this fantastic recording of Katharina Thalbach's 2008 production for Opernhaus Zurich. Haitink conducts the Zurich Opera Orchestra in a magnificent performance in which Leonore Overture No. 3 provides an interlude between the two scenes of the second act, following a tradition started by Gustav Mahler. German soprano Melanie Diener, in the role of Leonore, leads a brilliant cast including Alfred Muff as Rocco, Roberto Saccà as Florestan, Sandra Trattnigg as Marzelline and Christoph Strehl as Jaquino. This High Definition recording with true surround sound marks the start of the exciting collaboration between Opus Arte and Opernhaus Zurich.

Poster for Camille Chamoux - Chamouxland

2024 · ★ 6.0 (7)

In the land of Chamoux, there are powerful women from the 2020s who are unable to get a raise, hyper-efficient secret agents who are unaware of their abilities, friends who listen without seeming to, and women who believe in telekinesis. There are girls who count quickly and accurately, girls who speak too softly, and girls who think too loudly. The common thread is Elise Lucide, an insatiable and sensationalist investigative reporter, a pure product of the old-school French media landscape, determined to bring viewers the purest essence of this terra incognita: female humor. From couple's life to palliative care, from schools to Comedy Clubs, Chamouxland is a journey to the limits of the post-modern, post-feminist, and post-Me-Too world.
