Born intersex in a rural village in South Africa, Nthabiseng's mother is forced to make radical choices if she is to protect her infant from being taken away to the apartheid hospital where black people often inexplicably die. Nthabiseng tells their story directly to the camera and traces a history that moves from a tiny village of only five houses in rural Limpopo, to their bruising first experience with a doctor in town at the age of thirteen which leaves them feeling that something is wrong with them. The feeling persists till they are at university in Johannesburg and realize that, far from getting the help they had imagined, their story is simply a fascinating research case for the doctors they visit. As they begin to meet intersex activists, they see that the isolation and erasure of intersex people is systemic and that there are many others like themselves. Nthabiseng the activist emerges and steps into their power.

In December 2013 I went to Cuba for 10 days to show my films at the Havana Film Festival. I did not intend to shoot a film about Cuba- but I fell in love with the people, music, and nature of this beautiful island. I turned my video camera on the subjects which passed in my view and then made this edit. The scenes were shot in Havana, in Las Terrazas, and in the Orchid Garden in Soroa. - to Cuba with affection!

The piece that inspired the films is the composition of Eduardo Díaz Méndez, an ayüük composer, who is also an agricultural engineer. In conversation with the artist we discovered how “poverty” is a un concept learnt from outside to see ourselves, that generates a fragmented vision of out own reality. The process of discovering our wealth is the process of the cultural re-appropriation that we have challenged the new generations to enjoy, to honor what we are. The labelling of our people as poor, a labelling that comes from the capital cities, is a form of violence that questions what we are as peoples, as well as questioning our way of life and culture.
