‘Myth Labs’ interweaves Puritan visions, folk art, religious allegories and victims of the current Methamphetamine epidemic. This is a film about fear, paranoia, faith and loss of faith and salvation. ‘Myth labs’ takes place in the American frontier and wilderness. Similarly to Meth addicts in rural America, for the Puritans the wilderness represented a place of their damnation and their ultimate resurrection synonymously. Through blending these two times in American history, I attempt to illuminate the idea that the lure of this drug for contemporary rural inhabitants is rooted in our earliest consciousness-forming experiences as settlers in a state of spiritual and physical emergency. Overly fervent faith and addiction alike, can change one from mere mortal to Superman to scarecrow. Just as a ‘wolf in sheeps clothing’ these two vices (or devices) of salvation can have devastating consequences.

Every September Sydney's inner-suburban Leichhardt Council re-elects it mayor. Incumbent Larry Hand was popular with the citizenry but they don't vote for mayor - the 12 councillors do - and after three years of Larry, at least four councillors were after his job. When film-makers Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson settled in at Leichhardt Council in early 1994 the knives were already being sharpened. A battle royal was in the making, and so it came to pass. By the end of September Larry had fought the fight of his life, with Connolly and Anderson documenting every bit of it on film. Ambition, courage, envy, hatred, loyalty, betrayal, disaster, triumph... in other words, a classic study in politics.

In one scene in Italian Dreams, we see a close-cropped view of Weems’s face juxtaposed with the visages of two young black women. She caresses their faces gently; a haunting melodic sound track plays. In another sequence, Weems— again dressed in black, but now in combat boots—walks through Rome’s Cinecittà. There, she meets a white man wearing a suit. He talks; she listens closely, then enfolds him in an embrace and engages in a slow, semi-erotic grind. But he is dull and stiff in her arms. It is clear Weems holds the power in this exchange; she shifts the paradigm of the seducer from male to female. From this scene she moves on, ascending staircases and wandering through corridors.
