Doris "Granny D" Haddock is the nation's oldest political newcomer. Now 94 and still fed up with politics as usual, she jumps at an unexpected chance to run for U.S. Senate. With just four months until Election Day, Doris and her motley crew of political aces and amateurs craft a feisty campaign that personifies her democratic ideals of a government of, by and for the people.

We see this when painfully shy protag Yoshino decamps from her isolated Tokyo life to visit the historic town of Ueda in Nagano Prefecture – so historic that complete fossils are found (!). While staying at a guest house that doubles as a theatre and cafe, she explores the scenic city and its surrounding countryside and learns from locals about their histories, the lay of the land, and the flow of time. Gradually, like the fossils that have come to light in the area, Yoshino’s spirit emerges from the dark as she reflects upon how the locals have changed her.

Poster for Pure Love: The Voice of Ella Fitzgerald

2017 · ★ 8.0 (2)

Ella Fitzgerald's voice is a phenomenon and unrivalled to this day. She had the perfect pitch and perfect intonation. Ella's voice spanned three octaves, her phrasing seemed effortless. There is almost no style of music, in which she did not excel, and her numerous - now legendary - recordings of the 'Great American Songbook' with pieces of US composers such as George and Ira Gershwin, Harald Arlen, Cole Porter or Duke Ellington, remained a benchmark for the "right" interpretation of those songs for generations of singers. In the film the focus will be on the voice of Ella Fitzgerald. We want to unravel the secret of her voice through many different people (musicians, singers, critics etc.), who will tell about what impact her voice had on them and still has. We want to learn more about Ella´s life to find out what made her sing like she did and only she could.
