On the way to the Black Sea, old routines and relationships begin to falter until Else disappears in the delta and Niko dances in the Panorama Lounge of his ship, bleeding. A film about motherhood, masculinity, home and the (im)possibility of becoming a different person.

Poster for Imprint in Clay

“Sardar Gurcharan Singh was the father of studio pottery in India. "Daddyji" as most called him lovingly was very close to my father. I often tagged along to visit his home studio where pottery wheels were lined up under the big neem trees in his old brick house. My father wanted me to make a film on Daddyji, who was then 95. He was afraid that Daddyji's wonderful story would be left untold. He not only introduced studio pottery in India but due to his longevity, mentored many potters. So despite not knowing anything about films, I made the documentary, Imprint in Clay with a classmate of mine, which was mostly funded by my father.”

About the fact that honesty will get you the furthest... The main characters of the fairy tale are two tinkers, a now extinct profession in which men travel the countryside and repair earthenware pots for peasants and the like. The older of them, Jura, tries to earn some extra money in all sorts of ways other than honest work, while the younger Martin is an honest man from the bone and a hard worker to behold. We also meet poor Vojta, who catches birds, the beautiful and rich Eliška and robbers, but most importantly we understand that honesty will get you the furthest in life.

Hanna Kaihlanen’s vision discovers a fantastic dimension that intersects with the real within the bleak Nordic landscape of Finland, and her expressive editing often loses track of the distinction between the two. The film is inspired by ecological issues and questions humanity’s claims to control and overcome nature: the director follows the chaotic logic of wildlife, like the film’s subject who tracks wild elk.

“Beyond the Pale” was written (& partially recorded) in front of a live audience, so it feels extra-strange not to be able to take it on the road at the moment. Fortunately, our friends Iain & Jane suggested a way round the problem: set up our equipment in a cave & they would film the results. We have invented a new way of playing a concert.
