Filmmaker Kurdwin Ayub dances through Vienna on her own to the sounds of Go! Go! Gorillo, exploring public spaces in her black chador. She encounters amused groups of men and apathetic passersby, letting nothing disturb her calm or throw her off-beat. Dancing on her own, so to speak. The final highlight is a wonderful quote from Andrzej Żuławski in a U2 station!

Before the family home in Shalun, Taoyuan, was demolished under the Taoyuan Aerotropolis redevelopment project, the director's mother passed away unexpectedly. Yet in her absence, the family's long-fragile order seemed to stabilize, even appearing strangely "happy." This subtle and difficult truth compels the director to repeatedly return to the old house on the verge of disappearance, insisting on bringing back her father and brothers, who are trying to move on. As the boundaries between filming and being filmed blur, differing attitudes toward farewell gradually emerge, and long-suppressed memories begin to seep through. The director is left asking herself: Is this an attempt to preserve memory, or a way of trapping herself in a cycle of loss from which she cannot find closure.

Poster for Bieber Generation

2018 · ★ 1.0 (1)

This documentary film attempts to analyze the dynamics of a massive fan-base; it focuses on the Beliebers (fans of Justin Bieber). The Beliebers are one of the largest fan-bases on the planet, they dominate social media and it seems that almost everyone has an opinion about them. Beliebers feel that they are generalized about and attempt to help non-Beliebers understand them through this film. From the charity work they do to the bullying they receive, the film attempts to uncover all of it by talking to Beliebers and non-Beliebers from around the world and sharing their experiences. Although the film will appeal to Beliebers, it is also targeted at those attempting to understand such phenomena and promotes communication and understanding from an unbiased position in general.

Poster for Window Work

2000 · ★ 4.0 (1)

A woman drinks tea, washes a window, reads the paper: simple tasks that somehow suggest a kind of quiet mystery within and beyond the image. Sometimes one hears the rhythmic, pulsing symphony of crickets in a Baltimore summer night. Other times jangling toys dissolve into the roar of a jet overhead, or children tremble at the sound of thunder. These disparate sounds dislocate the space temporally and physically from the restrictions of reality. The small home-movie boxes within the larger screen are gestural forms of memory, clues to childhood, mnemonic devices that expand on the sense of immediacy in her “drama.” These miniature image-objects represent snippets of an even earlier media technology: film. In contrast to the real time video image, they feel fleeting, ephemeral, imprecise.
